We did the pilgrimage for Redentore yesterday, walking across the Guidecca canal
on the makeshift bridge build  for the Festa del Redentore.

In petition to God to end the plague senate erected a temple to the Redeemer of mankind, and decreed that on the 3rd Sunday of July there would be hereinto-fore a public and solemn services of thanksgiving held annually. Scarcely had the plague ceased when they began to fulfil their vow.

More than 50,000 had been lost in Venice in that plague of 1576.
One third of the population died.
Everyone lost a brother, a mother, a sister, or a friend.
Those of you who read my words have heard me talk about a previous plague - the plague of 1348 - which birthed the Renaissance.
I make it sound simple when I write it that way, but to those living in that time it wasn’t simple.  
It was hard.
It hurt.
There was death and loss and sorrow.
Change is not easy.
And it doesn’t happen overnight. Sometimes change comes in waves.
Like grief.
Just when you think you’ve healed another wave of grief comes and this time the healing goes deeper.
The Renaissance didn’t happen over night.
It came in waves.
Venice experienced 22 outbreaks of the plague between 1361 and 1528 and with each outbreak came more change.

The plague brought a paradigm shift.
It closed out the Middle Ages and ushered in a new era and with it came a new way of thinking, behaving, new advancements and ideas.
