Italian Food

The thing I like about Italian food is it’s simplicity. Just the basics.

Frigitelli with Potatoes. 2 ingredients. Well, 4 - if you count salt & olive oil - I don’t. Those are as essential as a glass of wine. Tonight I opened a rosè. If the hour no longer has significance in quarantine- then season shouldn’t either. So I drink in long hot afternoons in the Cote d’Azure. I wore a tank top today and sat inside my window in the sun. I long for that roof top terrace I had when I lived in Berlin but in quarantine you can travel anywhere simply by closing your eyes. I’m in Saint Remy de Provence. In that leafy garden behind my favorite gite laying in a hammock. I remember that endless summer when I lay for days reading book after book. Such fond memories. When did I stop reading? Business books, yes. I still read. Self help, surely. But the pure bliss of fiction so juicy it explodes in my mouth like the first bite of an orange? I can’t remember when. No. I can. I was on vacation with a boy. And he hit me. It only happened once. Once was enough. We were in our hotel room and he said I was being a bitch. Maybe I was? And I don’t know. I threw said book I never finished reading and within seconds I was on the floor my face bloody and he was kicking me kicking me kicking me. It’s a memory that haunts me. A memory I don’t like. And in quarantine your mind takes you to places you don’t want to go. What I’ve learned about emotions is this. You have to feel them. You have to acknowledge their existence. Hello Anger. Nice to meet you. Loneliness you old friend. Anxiety and Fear. You’re really too much for me. I release you. You are not wanted here. I open the window escorting them to it like a door. They go out. Fresh air comes in. I open all the windows. Fiorella sleeping on the chaise longue stretches her whiskers to sniff the air. Smell transports us riding like Aladdin on a carpet. In Italy scents coming from the kitchen embrace you. Daily life in quarantine revolves around food. Greek yogurt for breakfast. A heaping spoon full of honey, so dark and thick you can’t stir. Lunch I forget. But dinner. Dinner is my daily dance with myself.
