Laughter

I heard children’s laughter. Yesterday I got a letter from heaven. A get out of jail free card. The postman tried to deliver a package when I was in the shower.

I told you. I feel things. I pick up on the magical energy of moments. That voice I sometimes hear rang loud and clear. Now it’s time for Joy. And at that moment when the doorbell rang I found myself sudsing my hair singing in the shower, I've seen trees of green, red roses too, I’ve seen 'em bloom for me and you. And I think to myself. What a wonderful world. In quarantine I sing. Loudly. Frequently. Off key. Belting out lyrics as if I’m on Broadway. And my voice isn’t half bad. It’s not half good either. But I digress. I was singing. And The door bell rang. There I stood naked and wet. I hopped out of the shower, tripping on the cat - I never go to the bathroom alone.. Wrapped myself in a black and white zebra striped silk robe and raced down the Stairs. I missed the mail man. Damn It. Dejected I start to close the front door to my building. I have a gray towel on my head turban style. It’s topsy-turvy. A package meant news from the outside world and who ever it was from it surely contained chocolate - most likely Reece’s- my waist line is a growing problem I am choosing to ignore. And then I saw it. That slip of paper. Manna from heaven. You’ve got mail. I had to go to Rialto to pick up the package. That was well beyond my 200 meters- the 1/10th a mile I was allowed to travel for necessities- and I had a hall pass. Suddenly I am in a Van Halen video. I'm hot for teacher I got it bad, so bad.... I go to bed early. I rise early. I couldn’t sleep. It’s Christmas morning. Hurriedly I dress. I race out the square and across town. Smiling. Greeting each person I see. Ciao! Salve! Buongiorno! I see my waiter friend. He calls out. I tell him excitedly! I get to go to the post office! And he laughs seeming shy and not sure what to say to me. We’ve shared this intimate moment that made us friends but we don’t really know each other. I laugh and yell, See You Later! I text Art! I’m going to the post office!!!! He responds. We got stopped by the police and told they are watching us. We leave the House too frequently. We walk too far. My heart hurts for him. He needs to move. We make plans to meet the next day at the grocery store. I’m the bell of the ball and my dance card is full. And then I see it. A little girl. Skipping rope. Her dad is sitting on a bridge in the sun . And she’s running across the Campo with a jump rope laughing. I've seen skys of blue and clouds of white. The bright blessed day, The dark sacred night. And I think to myself What a wonderful world.
