Those of you who followed my #quarantinediaries will remember Harvey. My pet seagull who started coming daily during lockdown. He came every day around all of March April and May.  He was banging on the windows at all hours. 

Of course I eventually gave in and fed him but I trained him > he’s only allowed to eat at 2pm. 

Seagulls are smart - they remember schedules and so like clockwork he would bang at 2 if I hadn’t set leftovers outside. 

But he wouldn’t bang the rest of the day he would just spy on us. 

After lockdown when I wasn’t home as much we changed our routine. 

He watches me in my bedroom in the morning from the rooftop across the canal. 

He flies slowly by all the windows looking inside. The cats run from one end of the apartment to the other - chasing him out the window. He lands in the bedroom window and when the cats catch him there he flies to the living room. And he bangs until the cats come to this window too. 

I’ve watched. He doesn’t do this with the neighbors. Just me. 

Back and forth the cats and Harvey go for hours of entertainment. But mostly he watches me. He stands sentinel, guard over me as a write.

He drives me insane at times and yet... he has become part of my Venetian family. An unlikely companion indeed.

I keep wondering what does it mean when you have a seagull as your spirit animal?
