New Moon

Basalmic Vinegar and brown sugar. Butter sizzling in the pan. I’m making Scallion Jam. I woke discovering my home had been invaded by the earthy scent of Green Onions. Over night they’d ripened to pungent perfection ready to be preserved. I will venture out today in search of a pate and a crispy bread.

Last night was a new moon. With it came a new energy. In today’s busy world we don’t think how the moon impacts us - but there’s a reason the Farmers Almanac lists the cycles.

The moon is powerful - so powerful it moves oceans. We have forgotten that we are also affected by this energy. And just like the deniers who said Covid19 was a political hoax on an election year - you don’t have to believe in the moons power for it to impact you. You feel it in your bones whether you believe or not.

Just as God hung the stars and moon, he created you. The universe is connected interwoven each action impacting another. We are one. The chant of the moment #Flattenthecurve shows this.

The New Moon is the time of the lowest energy during the lunar cycle. With less energy, we are naturally attuned to going inward, resting and being still. It’s a time to dream - to plan - to manifest.

During this virus I find myself doing Moon Gardening on my Soul. Just as moon cycles impact plants growth- with new moon stimulating the leaves growth and the full moon the roots, in quarantine I feel we are like seeds, buried underground, needing the darkness to grow roots and sprout.

In the Quiet Place we hear our dreams allowing us to make our dreams come true. What is your soul saying to you?

Living in Venice, a city at mercy to the tide, I feel the moons pull more than any other place I’ve lived. You might say until I moved to Venice I was a nomad. I’ve lived 20 Years in Europe: 5 in Paris, 5 in Amsterdam, 8 Berlin. But Moving to Venice 2 years ago felt like coming home.

On nights before this quarantine I would walk over Academia bridge cutting behind the Palazzo Contarini Polignac, passing The Peggy Guggenheim- I joke, “the other American” - through the Calles of Dorsodoro, lingering near Salute before arriving the tip of the island Punta della Dogana - the old customs house where I stand before it like Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio on the bow of Titanic arms spread wide. I make this pose standing alone. A solitary walk. Even when I have a boyfriend. It’s become my place. A place where I can be alone. All of Venice is before me. The basin of San Marco licking at my toes. Above, atop the building, two Atlases lift a golden bronze ball with a weathervane in the form of Fortune. Oh Giuseppe Benoni, the architect, had a hint of irony - I think when I watch the God of Luck turning with the wind.
