#OhSoGritti and witty and wise!! Today I begin my @ifdany Instagram take over and we are checking into @thegrittipalace. In fact the last time I saw #IFDANY President @Strictlysanti we were sipping cocktails on the Gritti terrace. Do you remember the lyrics from the sitcom #Cheers theme song? “Sometimes you want to go, Where everybody knows your name, And they're always glad you came”. For me this place in Venice is the #GrittiBar - which might be a tad ;) fancier than the Boston watering whole- but in fact I think in Hemingways Venice in the 1940s might have had that Cheers vibe albeit with a Venetian twist.

Earlier this year during lockdown I swooned as @lievschreiber took over my neighborhood as he filmed Across the River and into the Trees. I picked up the paperback and discovered that #theGritti in the 1940s was described as place where the food is good and the maître d' a soulful friend but the bathrooms are all down the hall. Today the bathrooms are en suite and impeccable. American #interiordesigner @chuckchewning did a splendid renovation mixing antiques, custom-made furniture and @Rubelli_group fabrics. But my favorite room in the hotel is the mirrored Bar Longhi. When I walk in the door Maurizio greets me with a smile and my name Signorina Toma. We both know I’m more a Signora than a Signorina but I appreciate the discretion. When I sit down the first drink is #TheLastCocktail - one of their Signature cocktails. They know what I want without asking. And it arrives at the table. Gin. Prosecco. Pear Juice.

The palazzo has the prime location on the Grand Canal just opposite Salute. Originally built in the 14th century it was redesigned in Venetian Gothic style in 1475. By 1525, it became the private residence of Doge Andrea Gritti. Today it’s art and design doyens home away from home. Guests do not come once to the Gritti. But rather return time and time again to this place #everyoneknowsyourname.
