It’s been one year since I’ve been in America. 

I’ve lived overseas 21 years and during this time I’ve always gone home to Oklahoma at least twice a year. Normally I spoke in the USA at trade fairs or conferences at least 4 times a year. 

I live in Europe and I love my life here. But I am an American. I think like an American. I smile like an American. I make friends with strangers like I’m an American. 

I miss America. This pandemic has taken my nation from me. 

Covid has taken 1 year away from me seeing my mom, who is older and in poor health. 

Covid has taken 1 year away from seeing my dad, who though I think he will outlive me- he is still not a spring chicken.

Covid has taken a year out of seeing my nieces and nephews and being a part of their life.

It’s taken my career from me - a career dependent upon travel. 

It's taken my public speaking career in America from me which was one of my favorite things I did in life. 

I reinvent. 

I adapt. 

I move on. 

I am happy and well adjusted. 

I am not dwelling in my loss. 

But today I miss America. I miss my family. I miss my friends. I miss my career. I miss the life I had. I miss restaurants. 

I miss wearing shoes when I eat dinner. 

Today I need comfort food. 

My friend suggested that even though all the restaurants are closed due to Covid that we do takeout. Take out is not a “thing” in Europe. 

With Covid the restaurants in Venice are attempting to start take out service. It’s an attempt to stay in business. And this burger. This burger and fries from Hard Rock Cafe Venice tasted like America. This burger and fries tasted like normal.
