The Hum

The sound of silence.

I recently started hearing it so loudly I can’t sleep. It wakes me.

They call it “The Hum”.

It’s a rumble. Like an idling engine on a parked car. A slight vibration.

I first became aware of it when I shot awake to a slight vibration 6 days ago. The day after the 6.4 earthquake in Croatia. My friends and I all felt it in Venice that day before- chandeliers swinging and a city built on water swaying slightly as if at sea.  So when I woke to a low vibration in the early morning I texted my Venetian friends and said I think we just had another earthquake.

But google showed nothing.

But this sound continued.

The sound of silence.

The next morning it returned. This vibration. And again the next.

Okay this is getting annoying I thought, waking me from my sleep.

I googled “rumbling sound in morning” and stumbled upon #thehum. Alessandro told me to stop googling.

I remembered a few months back a friend mentioning it and I text her. “Is this what you hear?”

Her fingers fly in response. “Oh thank God - you hear it too”.

Apparently only 4% of the population hears this sound. It’s a persistent and invasive low-frequency humming, rumbling, straight out of the XFiles.  I hear it for hours in the morning. Like the sound of a generator running in the next room. But the sound hurts my ears.

It’s a self fulfilling prophecy hearing this noise. Once you hear it - you can’t unhear. Your ears become attune and more aware.

Do you hear it? The sound of silence in the morning when you sleep? Apparently it’s also often heard at night before sleep too. While a widespread phenomenon around the world there is no full on explanation- or way to make it stop.

The internet is a gaggle with explanations- gas pipes, power lines, factories, mobile phones, wind farms, nuclear waste, even low-frequency submarine communications. Then the dark theories abound secret military activity, aliens and government cover-ups. Other words are whispered of spiritual awakenings and energy upgrades on earth.

Yes I hear you Alessandro. Stop googling.
