Fortuny and Fiorella have gotten good at traveling. Like me they are a contrast in studies- adventurous yet loving routine. Traveling with cats takes planning - they have their own suitcase- a portable litter box and cat scratch pad as well as their own carriers - Fortuny rides in my straw bag. At home he sleeps in this basket in my office- so when it’s time to go it’s more familiar than a pet carrier. It smells like him. He’s more reluctant to leave the nest than Fia but more of an explorer once we get to the new destination. When I tuck him under my arm in my basket and his head pops out people gasp in delight! “Un Gatto!” And then Fia’s head emerges from her backpack on Lori Lassen and they exclaim, “Due!!” Lori has one of Fortuny and Fiorellas kittens - she’s got a title - “Gigi Adaline Dutchess di Venezia” who also loves to travel - sadly we didn’t think it wise to bring her on this trip along side her mamma and papa - and she discovered this backpack method of Travel which Fia adores. It’s her safe haven. She calmly observes the world from this vantage point. (Photo of Lori and Fia taken in Venice on our morning of travel from Venice - the rest leaving Rome. ) Another suitcase contains our kitchen- cutting boards, table clothes /beach sheets, plates and knives and everything we need to turn a balcony in to an impromptu kitchen and dining room. It takes a lot of luggage and artful packing when it’s time to change hotels or AirBnBs... but this trip has been among the best in my life. I needed this. To get away. And yet with my traveling kittens there is also the familiar.
