A Salve for My Soul

It’s the last day. The end of the trip. It’s time for the boys to go home. A flight to Madrid then New York and finally a flight home to Dallas awaits in the morning. #nothinggoldcanstay

Derrick and Jacobs visit has been a salve to my soul. The leaves are changing from yellow to rust on vines laid out like a chequerboard, along steep slopes. Ciglioni – they call them- small plots of vines on narrow grassy terraces – forests, small villages and farmland embrace. You can’t tell where one ends and the other begins. A leaf falls from the tree and blows across the road in front of us and I watch it disappear over the hill. Even our host for the day, a friend we’ve met up with in Valdobiadenne to drive us to his favorite places, is booking his trip to return to back to his outpost in South America soon.

But on this day, everything is gold #staygoldponyboy I think - smiling at my friends as sunlight dances through the car. All of nature has conspired on our behalf to give us this perfect day. I want to bottle the light and save it. Warm memories. Good friends. People I love. Lots of laughter and as always good food. I buy wine. Prosecco from Campion. Their logo is the profile of a cat. The vineyard cat wraps his tail around my leg and jumps on the table to visits each of us testing us if we know how to pet him right, like the prince in cinderella bringing the shoes around to try. Which lap is the perfect fit? He meows. We drink Prosecco- trying one without bubbles. We are in the valley from whence the bubbles come. Bubble-less Prosecco is a curiosity. We return to the spumante. At the end of the day our host asks… do you want to see snow? Si. Si. Si. I say. It’s the first snow of the mountains so we drive up from Le Colline del Prosecco di Conegliano e Valdobbiadene on steep roads where our host rides his mountain bike on warm days. At 1072 meters the snow settles on the land around us. And I step from the car to feel the crunch and cold. Christmas lights are up.

Though we are in Italy - and giorno del ringraziamento is just a translation - not a landmark day of celebration - our Thanksgiving break has officially come to an end. Nothing Gold Can Stay. #republicoftoma
