Caffè Florian

“I like this place.” my sister said. And I smiled. Some people dream their entire life of eating breakfast at @caffeflorian. For the time @marvelousmissyhancock was in Venice #caffeflorian became our local spot for coffee & croissants in the morning. “They taste different here.” She said. “Better. The best we’ve had in Europe.” She was right. We were inside sitting at the bar. A local tip is you can eat or drink at the bars of the grand cafe for the same price as on the Le Cafe near my house on the Campo Santo Steffano. “It’s the oldest cafe in Italy. It was established in 1720. We’d seen the worlds oldest cafe - Le Procope - a week earlier in Paris when told the story of the mouse which stood in the doorway not letting me enter. It was founded in 1686. “Something that surprised me…” she said “croissants in Paris didn’t taste much different than America.” “Globalization.” I responded. The internet, cooking shows and food magazines have brought the world to America. On one hand everyone has access to good quality, international cuisine. That’s good. On the other it’s harder and harder to find things that are not available internationally. This said as I bit into the almond croissant. “Oh my god, you’ve got to taste this.” I tore off half the almond croissant and handed it to her. “Holy hell that’s good.” A sign of a good croissant is when you take both heaven and hells name in vain. “I’ve never tasted anything like this.” She said. And I smiled. Wiping crumbs from my chin. It’s why I love eating when traveling. Creating these taste memories. My mom always talked about French Onion soup in Paris. “Remember the nun.” She asked? “Remember how she ate her French onion soup so fast? I’ve never seen anyone eat so fast in all my life.” Mom said. One of the last meals my sister had with mom before she passed was at Panera Bread. French Onion Soup. “It’s not like Paris. But I love this soup.” Mom said. Remembering her time with me in the shadow of Notre Dame. My sister will do the same. She’ll return home and one day will see an almond croissant in a bakery and taste it, remembering our mornings on the piazza San Marco. “Its good. But not as good as Venice.” she will say.
