How to Travel with Cats

Fortuny & Fiorella. One of the things I’m asked most regularly is HOW I travel with 2 cats. It takes a system. You have to be organized. One cat goes in the backpack. One in the wheelie. Both cats are wearing harnesses and leashes. So if they jump, they are secure. Right hand suitcase. Left hand cat. On my back cat. Purse attached on top of suitcase. Inside my Chanel is a sealed small Tupperware container with a traveling litter box for the train’s restroom. Inside side pocket of cat carrier is wet & dry food & dishes. They like porcelain. Everything the cat needs for travel is in half my suitcase - including litter, a cat bed, & cardboard scratch post, which I set up soon as we arrive the hotel.

In a pinch Fortuny will use the bidet but they both prefer the comforts of home. They have been trained since kittens to travel. Fia, is a girl, and girls are more social. She’s more curious and more keen to talk to strangers. Fortuny is highly motivated by the Molly cat treats and rewarding him regularly in essential. When I got the cats, I knew that with my travel schedule that in order to be a responsible pet owner they needed to have a pet sitter who stayed with them when I am on the road or they needed to be able to travel well. They are snobs. They prefer a water taxi to the vaporetto and an executive class cabin on the train to standard economy. But they are adaptable. This time we went 2nd class. The prefer a suite to a mere hotel room. A view with birds is essential. Fia genuinely likes traveling. Fortuny wants to go to but gets overwhelmed. Fia grooms him when he’s stressed and he always waits and lets her eat first. Both bond with me and each other when I travel. They rely on me and they know if I am near they are safe. They watch me. In the hotel lobby I left them on the couch when I paid my checkout and they sat patiently but watched my every move. They love the moment I take off their harnesses because that means wherever we are is home!
