Paper Diamonds

It drives me nuts that my vintage shawl is off centered in this pic. But I like this picture because it’s me.

I’m not perfect. I’m always working on myself and spend a lot of my life striving to become - nee, to uncover, to find, to dig deep inside myself - to become the best version of me.

I’m messy. I organize my house night and morning because I’m a perfectionist, and I like things around me to be beautiful but my nature at my heart is still that of the little girl my father reprimanded for having little bits of paper following me around.

“Toma… stop being such a pig pen.”! I was outraged. Stamping my feet. “Im not a pig pen!!!” Pointing at the little bits of paper trailing me…. “These are paper diamonds!” I shout back at my dad.

At night while my sister slept in the room beside me, I got out my scissors in the moonlight and I took my glue and I cut paper diamonds and glued them all over my pajama’s. In the morning when I woke a trail of paper diamonds followed me wherever I went.

Paper is fragile. It’s vulnerable. It can tear. It can burn. Tears can destroy the words on which are written and yet, paper was born out of papyrus - the bulrush plant from which Moses’ mother built his cradle and set him afloat in the Nile.

The Power of Paper can surprise you. Don’t underestimate it.

If Paper is perceivably fragile then diamonds are strong. The word Diamond is derived from the Greek word “adamas”. It means Invincible.

I haven’t had much time to write lately because I’ve been working on my own paper diamonds. So many projects are percolating behind the scenes. Things that aren’t ready to be talked about. Things that take time.

In Hindu folklore it is said diamonds are formed when lightning strikes a rock. Though romantic the lore is wrong. Diamonds are formed under pressure. Out of darkness, comes the light. In order to find a diamond you have to go deep inside the mine - excavate it, cut and polish. You have to bring the diamond to the surface for it to shine.
