Venice Meets Paris

A spritz macaron. I moved to Paris when I was 25 and it shaped me. What is it Hemingway said? “If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.” I tasted my first macaron at Laduree on Rue Jacob near my apartment in the 6eme arrondissement. Before then I thought macarons were a clump of shaved coconut. I haven’t been a fan of shaved coconut since my 3rd birthday when my mom made a cake shaped like a rabbit with a pink jellybean nose and whiskers and giant ears covered in shaved coconut. I cried. So imagine my surprise 20some years later when 3 perfectly poised macarons - framboise, citron and chocolat- made with whipped meringue and almond flour were served with the most delicate loose leaf Darjeeling. In Cortina, taking an espresso standing at a bar on the pedestrian road shortly after disembarking the bus, I found the Spritz Macarons. A perfect illustration of the life I want to live. I want to buy a little house in Provence and divide my time between Provence and Venice. The best of both worlds. Like a spritz macarons.
