Born to be a Writer
I write. That’s what I do. I was born to do. My maiden name is Clark. I am a scribe.
This morning I journaled in Italian, writing a simple diary in foreign language. I journal daily. My top resolution for 2021 will be to keep my journal in Italiano instead of English.
Studying Italian I have struggled to get the words from inside my head to outside my lips. The words are there. So many of them crowding together bumbling together so that my dreams are half in Italian these days.
I have been in intensive language lessons for 3 months.
During this time of Covid when nothing is normal and we need to learn a new way of living it occurred to me that this was the best use of my time- to study Italian. It’s been bloody difficult. Yes the end result will eventually be that I speak Italian. But it’s more than that learning a new language - it’s learning a new way of living. It’s teaching my brain a new way to process things, to do things, to see things.
What you train your body or mind to do - you train your mindset to do. For example, I took boxing lessons. The result - I have buns of steel... but also it taught me to get up. When you get knocked down- you get up.
When you teach your brain a new language you’re teaching your brain a new way of living, of thinking about things. During this time... learning to see the world with new eyes seems possibly the most important skill I could learn in these days. And so I write. This morning I wrote in my diary in Italian.
