Butterflies
My friends ask. When did you become a philosopher? I don’t remember you this way. Maybe it was 2 months of solitary confinement - but I think the story began before then. I will tell you. About the months before the quarantine. That night in Thai Jail. The yoga master in Siem Reap. The around the world flight in January. A revolution around the world. The vision in November. The flood. Water symbolizes spirit. The knowing that has been inside of me this last year.
Oh I’ve got stories to tell.
But today I have mission. A message.
Listen up.
The butterfly doesn’t crawl back into the cocoon. That’s what I keep on thinking.
The world is opening - we are all emerging from our cocoon.
States and countries opening - some before they are ready - others emerging standing on wobbly legs blinking towards the sun.
How do we re-enter society? And not lose traction on what we are becoming? It’s funny the people I see who are The Deniers. Deniers that the world has changed. Those are the people who want the world to continue as it did before.
Don’t you see it?
You can’t go on as if nothing has changed.
Yes - we need to go on. That’s the exciting part. The new way of being.
But the butterfly doesn’t crawl back into the cocoon.
Maybe she wants to.
Maybe she breaks free from chrysalis and upon feeling the first wind upon her wings she tries to turn around and crunch and fold her wings pushing her tentacles into the space from which she came but she no longer fits back inside the shell.
She needs to spread her wings and fly.
At a certain point - point break- you reach the point of no return. And we’ve arrived this moment. It’s futile to try to return. It’s time to Become.
So imagine it with me.
What is this world?
This world you imagine?
How can your life - life in general - we as people - be better than it was - than we were- before?
I’ve disappeared as of late.
Not posting these morning musings because I was preparing for the new republic.
Yes you’ve heard about it.
The Republic of Toma.
But here’s the secret- it’s not about me. It’s about We. I am not the only one who has my own republic. So do you. The Republic of Me. And The Republic of You. The Republic of We.
I want you to join me. Because I’m starting a revolution. An overthrow of a social order, in favor of a new way of being. Together we create it. I’m not your guru. I’m figuring this out alongside you. But what I know is our old way of being wasn’t working.
We need change.
My Facebook group is not political. (In fact talk of politics is so verboten in The Republic I must say it in German because that’s the only word which expresses it’s significance.)
This is so much bigger than mere politics. It’s personal change.
We must first change ourselves before we can change the world.
Revolutions have occurred through human history and vary widely in terms of methods, duration and motivating ideology. Their results include major changes in culture, economy and socio-political institutions. Aristotle wrote about it. The French did it. So did The Americans. It’s been Bourgeois and Marxist movements. Proletarian and Monarchist. The moon revolves around the earth and the earth revolves around the sun.
If the moon can have a revolution... if the earth can have a revolution....if entire nations can have a revolution... why can’t we as people change?
Is it more difficult to change ourselves- our way of being - than an entire world order?
