Simple Pleasures

Truly Venice Apartments - Toma Clark Haines - Republic of Toma Diary.jpg

Such a simple pleasure. I am out. Out and About in Venice.  I wear my mask.  But I am smiling beneath it. Free to go where I want, when I want.  I talked to a friend.  He said "your voice... you're a different person." I've learned things about myself these days... I need people. I'm an extrovert - ENFP - it's where I get my energy.  But yet, I've also learned more about myself... I've learned I can be alone and there is strength gained in that insight.

I went to see Orsi and Luca to discuss an idea... we laughed - I love them - they make me feel at home in Venice - then I stopped by Valeria’s on the piazza San Marco where my Jewelry Republic of Toma is sold and she said “Let’s go!” To Rosa Salva. And I said, “Can we?? Really?” It’s allowed!?? It’s open! And we dashed around the corner gossiping about life and love and other mysteries. We didn’t eat a pastry. But we could have. The option was there!

Tomorrow she said. Let’s eat something. In the jewelry shop. I will prepare you a bite. It’s been since February since I’ve eaten someone else’s cooking. And then I bumped into Hany - from Vini da Arturo - and he said “You’re here! I thought you were in England.” (I didn’t have the heart to correct him that I’m American not British! ).

He said Give Me Your Phone. In June we will open. Special appointments. I will call you. So you can come!” We laughed and talked of these days. Such strange days. He said he walks miles and miles every day.

Next it was Alberto from Trois, one of my favorite antiques dealers! I pulled down my mask and showed him my smile. The sun is shining and Venice... felt good today. Yes there is worry. Worry for money. Worry for the virus. Worry for my immigration appointment I’m en route to - Too many people are on the Vaporetto with me now as I write. I wear black mask and gloves. But beneath the mask there is a smile.

There is for this moment hope. My friend Barbara is meeting me and we will take a taxi to Mestre- to the mainland - to see a lawyer to help with my visa problem. It’s all going to work out. I feel it. I worry. But I trust in the future life that I see.
