Cocteau Exhibit
“Look at him,” I say pointing to Cocteau’s biggest tableau. “He could have been at Berghain Club in Berlin last night.” I’m with @carlogalimberti & @olivierlongue. The Cocteau exhibit at @guggenheim_venice is astounding. Beyond inspirational. Lately I’ve been working with a branding specialist to help figure out what’s next for my career. Lamborghini started out as a tractor company. Ikea sold pens & wallets. As a business coach myself, @theantiquesdiva for #antiquedealers. I understand the importance of working with an expert to get you where you’re going. Going to the Guggenheim, I didn’t expect to find career inspiration. But that is how life & #art, travel, & #designinspiration work. Inspiration comes from places you least expect it.
Peggy herself began her career in the arts at her London gallery, Guggenheim June, with an exhibition of Cocteau’s drawings in 1938. Thus, it’s fitting that here in Venice, we enjoy the largest collection of Cocteau’s work ever assembled. Jean Cocteau was more than an artist. He was a brand. A writer. A poet. A novelist. A playwright. A movie director. An opera librettist, A songwriter. A jewelry designer. He embraced modernism in all its forms. And he was supported by a band of brothers. Many of the photographs of Cocteau are by Man Ray. He hung with Marc Chagal. Henri Matisse. According to an article in the NYTimes “In the 1930’s, Cocteau found time to do everything. One lover, Jean Desbordes, appears asleep in a series of poignant drawings. Cocteau even had a brief affair with a Russian princess before falling for Marcel Khill, with whom in 1936 he traveled around the world in 80 days.” Plus, he & Picasso were great friends & he adopted Picasso’s line style of drawing as his own. A style that reminds me of my nephew @gabrielhancockillustration To say I was inspired by this special exhibit @ the #guggenheim is an understatement. #lifeimitatesart I took time to read each caption. “Writing for me is drawing, joining up the lines in such a way that they become writing, or unjoining them in such a way that writing becomes drawing.”
