Conegliano

I’ve been here before. I said.

When I stepped out of the train station. Conegliano. If only I remembered all that I have seen or known before. I google sometimes topics in my industry and find in answer to my search articles that I have written. We explore the town in the Prosecco hills, stopping for a Prosecco before noon. An aperitivo. Otherwise how will our stomachs know it’s time to eat? I remember Lionel telling me this when I lived in France. This said after I declined an aperitivo at 10.30am after a hard morning antiquing. We walked up the hill to the 10th Castle, - thats not a typo - I meant to write tenth but I spell it in case you missed the point - my breath catching in my chest. Venice is flat. My chest is not.

Terra Firma. The mainland. I forget what it’s like out there. “Where the people are. Walking around on those, what do you call 'em? Oh, yeah…feet.” On the real land. Venice has its own vortex. A gilded cage. The longer you stay on the island the further the rest of the world becomes. So we took a day trip. Hop on the train at Santa Lucia and an hour later found ourselves in Conegliano - a town the perfect size for an afternoon strolling it’s tiny patriotic streets and enjoying a lunch not centered around the sea. #daytripsfromvenice
