It Was Hot
It was hot. And my washing machine is broken, a pair of socks or something clogging the drain not letting the spin cycle drain. For 3 weeks while I’ve been trying to get a repairman to come to my house in the dead of summer. “Wait til September” they respond. I’ve been relying on friends toting my laundry in my grocery trolley to other peoples house to drink Prosecco and do laundry. In the end it’s not a bad way to do laundry - socializing that makes getting mundane chores done feel almost fun. I am optimist. As my mother always so eloquently said, I could find a shiny penny in a pile of horse manure. It’s one of my talents. But yesterday it was just bloody hot. I’m in the middle of finishing up two massive business proposals, and it’s taken all my energy. I’m pouring from an empty vessel these days. And Marly kindly let me come to her house to wash my bed linens. I’ve had nonstop visitors, so I had 4 loads and European washing machine take about 3 times as long as American. Marly has the shutters closed to shut out the heat and the lights are off trying to prevent her apartment from getting too hot in the height of the day in Venetian summer and I am sweating bullets. My jumper was drenched in sweat. “Do you want some pasta?” “That sounds amazing,” I respond. “Take off your clothes” she instructs. “You’re going to have a heat stroke.” I oblige because I’m soaked stripping down to my bra & knickers. “On days like this it’s the only solution” she says “to survive the heat”. Venetian summers are brutal. The only positive thing to the heat is it’s been too hot to eat, and I’ve skipped dinner for the better part of two weeks. Now standing in my skivvies in Marly’s apartment overlooking Accademia bridge. I am hungry. The sweat on my skin is drying cooling me down and she says “I’ve seen you in a swimming suit. It’s the same thing.” “Given the fact I’m wearing a string it’s not quite the same thing” I argue as my bathing costume fully covers my derrière. But suddenly I am hot girl summer hungry and I need lunch. I bite into the thin spaghetti. Tomatoes. Garlic. Basil. Marly pours me a generous helping of over chilled white wine and we eat lunch. This is true friendship.
