Olive Groves

I walked into the olive grove. No picnic today. Just paints and a book to read in the sunshine. To lay in the grass and feel my body against the earth. Breathing in the smell of fresh grass. I’m on vacation. The sun on my skin. A floral scent I canìt identify wafts by as a big brown ant investigates my paint palette. “No food here. Moving’ on” he says over his shoulder to the others as he marches off into the dirt. I inhale deeply. Olive leaves. That is what I smell. Subtle. Green. Dry. Woody. Peppery. Herby. A hint of … butter? I count the smells #grounding myself on the present moment. #mindfulness I break a branch to bring home and hang in my shower as #aromatherapy. I live with essential oils. Bergamot on my pillow. Peppermint in my diffuser. Blood orange wafting at my desk. Inhaling deeply in the olive grove I think … “this scent cannot be diffused.” After laying a while staring up at the impossibly puffy clouds in the even more impossibly blue sky through the sage colored leaves I sit up to prepare painting. And I discover I have forgotten my paintbrush. I consider running back to @ancoradelchianti but decide instead to try something different. I dab my fingers in the water I brought with me and I touch the paint using various fingers for various shades of green. Finger painting. When was the last time I did this? I must have been 5 or 6 unabashedly smearing bright primary colors over sheets of white paper. Now I’m more hesitant. Inhibited. Remembering when everything used to be more free. I lean into the painting and realize my shoulders are swaying in a dance. I hear myself humming…”This ain’t Texas…” Finger painting is tactile and it makes me feel a little goofy. I glance around to make sure no one can see me. And dab more color painting not only what I see but what I feel. There is a connection between the physicality of finger painting and connecting with myself.
