Prolonging Return to Reality
It was a melancholic end to our vacation. We wanted one more day. Just one more day. My friend Andrea booked us to stay in this agritourism estate @aziendaagricolatollena near San Gimignano- from the balcony of our apartment we could see the town's towers. It was supposed to be a stop on the road home. An overnight stay and a mild detour returning to Venice to break up the long drive. We arrived and Patrizia opened a bottle and poured liquid gold into our glasses after the long drive north from Puglia. “Such a shame you’re only staying one night,” our host said. “Indeed, a shame.” I said. Lori was tired. I was on edge. The cats were restless; they wanted to explore the garden after the long drive. Fortuny had gotten familiar with his leash and he liked to pace the perimeter of each property we stayed marking his territory. Lori turned to me. “I wish we could stay.” “Me too,” I said. So we did. Delaying reality by one more day. Coming home to uncertainty, to an empty house, was hard. We didn’t want it to end. On the road life felt normal. Better than normal. And then dinner arrived at @aziendaagricolatollena - a first course so simple and delicious we forgot the 9 hour drive from Puglia to Tuscany - our favorite dish of the starter - scrambled eggs so full of truffles the mixture was practically brown. Then there was the Melon so sweet it dripped. My god. Bruschetta with tomatoes, wild boar sausage, a local cheese dripped with ginger mustard... all this followed by cacio e pepe. Mamma mia, with days like these it’s no wonder we don’t want to go home. As we ate Fortuny and Fiorella played nearby in the grass. Happy and Free. This trip felt like a never ending summer after being locked up in quarantine so long.
