The Heel of the Boot

Italy. Puglia. San Foca. The heel of the boot. And then we sang. Me Amazing Grace. Lori a Tibetian chant. The lights flickered. We were staying in an old monastery the history of which had served as a halfway house between the East and West. Now a converted restored Masseria. The first settlement on this land was in the year 400. The arched ceilings of the hall built for the sound of prayers. The cats would walk to one section of the wall and stand staring at something we could not see. They wanted to go, pawing at a passageway that didn’t exist. Looking back at us, insisting we take them. Finally we asked the proprietors. “Yes. There was a room there. The building continued.” Lori explained, “the cats see something we don’t.” And they agreed. “Many guests ask about that passageway. Many guests ask about the lights.” The building is old. There are explanations. And yet when we sang - me

“Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,” and she the Ohm, the lights flickered.
