Roots
The roots of the trees in the courtyard at the @guggenheim_venice grow side ways instead of downwards into the earth. Venice was build on piles of wood driven into marshy land - a city build on water. It’s fluid. And flexible. Several months ago in the middle of the afternoon my chandelier swung in my bedroom - not from an afternoon tete a tete but rather a 6.4 earthquake in Croatia. The earthquake was 233 miles - 376 kilometers- away - the ground undulated in a giant wave as the energy ripped through the earth. When it reached Venice the buildings didn’t crack, or break, they weren’t rigid, they just surfed the wave. My chandelier swung, the crystal glasses in my cabinet chimed, the cats and I looked at each other in surprise but the fish- Frank Sinatra Jr and Frank Jr Jr just rode the wave. They were fluid. Last week on Thursday I did an Instagram live from the terrace of the #guggenheimvenice with @lapada_association Afterwards I toured the museum admiring the Magrittes, Picasso’s and Paul Klee but it was the trees in the courtyard that lingered in my imagination. The roots of the trees grow side ways. My mother had a cross stitch that hung in our living room in my house as a child. It read “there are two lasting gifts you can give your children - roots and wings.” I’ve often said my humble origins growing up in Oklahoma are my blessing - I’m well grounded, down to earth, not pretentious. The diva brand works because a it’s tongue in cheek joke. But seeing this tree I realized roots grow in multiple directions - yes my upbringing, my family, grounded me, giving me roots. But Venice also gives me roots. My roots grow sideways as well as down. For the first time in my adult life I’ve spent one year on the ground without traveling. In the middle of a pandemic I found balance. I’m learning to surf. Yes There are peaks and crashes and breaks but I am learning to stand on the board and ride the the wave like Venice does. Venice has become more than my home, she is my teacher.
