The Perfect Film Set
Corsica. Just south of Bastia near Vescovato. The landscape looks like the set for a movie. I imagine the stories told of heroes and vendettas to be the perfect scripts for a black and white movie. You know the films. The ones seen at 4 in the morning when you can’t sleep. Drama packed, heroines with dark eyes, long lashes and exposed shoulders, ample decollete and pouty red lips. This is Corsica. The spirit of the past is still alive today. I feel it when I sleep. I dream of being chased, through the brush,up the mountain, hiding, waiting, my breath in my throat, heart beating in my chest. I wake. And I feel the energy in the air of days long ago.
Mornings are spent in the water. We go to this little stone beach and swim for an hour in the Corsican sea. French friends gather at the beach. My hosts are social and their life here in Corsica is full of friends and laughter, sea winds, blue skies and little espadrilles.
Lunches consists of a bowl of vegetable stacked upon the table - we each grab and tomato or a cucumber - maybe an avacodo- and we slice it on our plate with our laguiole knife, pour a generous splash of local olive oil, sprinkle with salt. Jean Pierre stands and drops ice cubes into a glass of Corsican Rose wine. In front of us below wind floats in off the Mediterranean Sea. My skin still tastes of salt after floating the morning away. I am happy. I am content.
In the afternoon again I nap.
