This Day in Elba

Elba appears like a ghost, in the horizon. I watch it come in and out of the mist from the balcony in Corsica of @danipelletiern summer home. The clouds play cache cache with the horizon. Elba. An island I had only read about. Napoleon escaped from here. 10 months he was in exhile. He befriended the island. Slow and steady making improvements to road systems and infrastructure, even creating a new flag luring his adversaries to complacency while he waited. We learn a lot from The Little Corsican. He was a king of strategy. He may have appeared to be settling into to Elba life but in reality he was putting the plans in place to escape. On the night of carnival Napoleon and his newly gathered army sailed off the island in plain sight. In the mist I imagine his ship. The events thereafter are the stuff of legends. Reclaiming his throne, the Battle of Waterloo, his later exile on St. Helena where his illness led to his death. The last words the emperor uttered just before dying are famous: "Six years ago, exactly, I came to Elba. It was raining. I could recover, if only I could feel that rain again. " Napoleon died on May 5, 1821, and every year on this day in Elba, a mass celebrates the memory of Napoleon Bonaparte. He had his faults. They were many. But he was one of the greatest strategists of all time. He was fearless in the battlefield, and had enough charisma to draw people in. Of course, there are other words that have been used to describe him: tyrant, revolutionary, ruthless politician. But one of his most enduring titles was that of a leader. We learn from his success but also we learn from his failures - never stop innovating, learn to delegate and build others up around you. Have patience - while moving forward is important- there is a time to be. Leaders need to ensure their teams are well trained in all tasks and don't lose their relevance. Most importantly Don't lose your temper unnecessarily. History debates was Napoleon a villain or a hero? I’m not sure but I know he was a genius. I like learning from the past to prepare for the future.  Dm me to find out how I can help you with #brandstrategy or #creativestrategy for your #smallbusiness
