Beach Lunch

Lunch at Marconi Beach. My neighbors texted, 1 word. “Beach?” God, I love my neighbors. Their messages always mean I am about to have a lot of fun. I pull on my swimsuit and red lipstick and quickly pack my first beach bag of the summer. I still have some La Roche Posay sunblock left over from last year, and I apply it generously head to toe before slipping on a summer dress and rolling my fouta, my Turkish towel that looks more like a shawl than a beach towel, and I tuck it in my straw bag. This. Is. Living.

When you tell people you live in Venice they think of canals and gondolas, bridges and high tide, but most foreigners forget that Venice is a beach town. Summers in Venice mean speed boats and cabanas and dips in the lagoon. Lido di Venezia has a faded glamour. You still see ladies in gold hoops and summer diamonds and Jackie O glasses. We go to Marconi Beach. The chairs aren’t yet set up, but the prosecco is flowing. I lose count of the bottles ordered and dive into cannolicchi - Razor Clams - and a sauté di cozze in a tomato sauce. The sauce is so good I drink it with a spoon. Marly and I make a pact that Bloody Mary is our drink of the summer. I’ve packed a book but the pages aren’t cracked. Instead I lay in the sun directly on the sand talk to to Matt about life, love and other mysteries. I have dinner guests coming casa mia that evening and I rush the boys, hopping in the boat. I need to get home. To cook. I barely make it home in time to wash the sand from my skin and my hair is still wet when the guests arrive. I decide that they get me at my most natural. Sun kissed and slightly tipsy. I think they are brave enough to handle it and I whip up an impromptu leak soup and we laugh long into the evening. It’s almost summer in Venice.
