I am Fine
I decided to spend a quiet Christmas by myself. Which is to say when you tell everyone you know that you’re going spend Christmas alone - then everyone invites you out. My phone didn’t stop ringing - nevertheless I persisted. I’m getting good at saying No - a lesson I needed to learn. I spent the majority of the Christmas holiday on my couch surrounded by my cats reading contentedly in the glow of the Christmas tree. Incidentally for the readers out there… I recommend Kerry Washington’s memoir Thicker Than Water and Elenor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman. That’s what I kept telling people “I am fine.” when they asked, Are you ok?” Are you depressed? It’s not like you to stay home alone for a solid week.” But I needed it.
My brain needed it.
My body needed it.
My cats needed it.
I needed to exorcise Christmas.
I really was fine but I’ve had a lifetime of difficult Christmas memories, and I think I needed to wash them all away. To face Christmas the way the bison turns and faces the storm. And it worked. I took the time to do some serious soul searching, and I came out on the other side dancing until 3am at @stregisvenice I danced like a 20 year old. I danced like a fool. I danced like nobody was watching. And this morning when I woke my soul kept on dancing (though my feet were happy not to be wearing dancing shoes anymore) I’m thinking this is my motto for 2024

Sing like nobody’s listening;
live like it’s heaven on earth.”
