Burano. Just off the boat. End of the night. Coffee at midnight. Laughter. Talking. Old friends. New friends. Conversations in Italian. And better yet - I didn’t just speak Italian- they understood me. I’m always afraid to speak Italian with people I know. But with strangers I am bold. I would send my Italian friend away so I could speak in Italian with his friends without him listening to my mistakes. Somehow I felt more confident speaking to someone new. They only know me as the smiling happy American who says “nights like tonight are the reason why I live in Italy.” They don’t care that I mispronounced words, or said words out of order, they are just happy we can communicate. And what I didn’t understand through words I understood through spirit.
Perfect night. It was a night to remember.
