We’re 50?

Back of the Bus kids. How did we turn 50? We take an outing, me & my boys, to the mainland for Chinese & we sit in the back of the bus. Pier says, “Hey, remember the kids in the back of the bus who were the ones who got in trouble?” We are talking loudly in English. Something my friends do for my benefit as they are Italian. Pier is right. 😂 We are Hooligans.

I realize how blessed I am. My friends. Pier, Ale, & Pietro. I complained recently to Pietro that 13 girlfriends had moved. Carol in Madrid. Sabina in Chiang Mai. Helena in Netherlands. I can’t remember which town? Chiara Paris. Katya. Where is she now? Korea? London? Enrica. Cape Town. Claudia. Phuket. I lose track. 13 Venetian friends now far flung. This is Venice. The tide comes in, the tide goes out. These girls are not the girls next door. I text Amy & she says YOU ARE SUCH AN EXTROVERT. But I am single. I live alone. I work from home. I spend a lot of time on the phone with clients & colleagues. If I don’t go out, I can be lonely. It’s important to connect. To be proactive. I make friends easily. All ages & demographics. But I’m learning to speak up when struggling. It’s Ok to not be Ok. In the past, I couldn’t do that. Now I say “Hey! I’m waving a 🚩” and Pietro fills my social calendar. Making friends after 50 has inherent issues. Where do you meet people? And yet, friendships are a key predictor of both #happiness & #longevity. In order to foster #friendships you have to be deliberate. Be a friend. Initiate activities. Invest time. And when invited, say Yes. This night I could have said “I don’t want to be only girl at dinner with 4 men.” Instead I said, “I feel like Marilyn Monroe in Gentleman Prefer Blonds”. #thenewhealthy #friendshipgoals
